Camp Pennsylvania, Kuwait | March 23, 2003
Aftermath of Grenade Attack.
15 years ago I woke up to blood and screams and smoke.
Two grenades exploded in the tent next to mine, a third - an incendiary grenade - lit the pod of tents on fire.
Confusion reigned. The scud alert sounded. We all broke out gas mask and atropine injectors. A British tornado jet was shot down near by.
We had no idea if we were under a sneak attack by Iraqi forces.
I ran out of the tent in my shorts, turned a corner and saw this…. A solider. Injured in what became known as a fragging attack by a fellow disgruntled American solider, one night before the 101st Airborne was due to deploy into Iraq.
This photo, and the ones that directly followed, started my career. These were my first round-the-world images. And my coverage of the Iraq war was subsequently picked up by major news magazines.
I’ve always struggled with the idea that my career was built on the backs of the death and suffering of other human beings. It’s hard to come to grips with.
